Differences between Portuguese from Brazil and Portugal
(Português Brasileiro Portuguese) is the dialect of the Portugueselanguage written and spoken by virtually all 190 million inhabitants of Brazil, and acouple million Brazilian immigrants, particularly significant in the United States, Portugal,Canada, Japan and Paraguay.
The differences between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese arecomparable to those between British and American English. This though some say thatthey are far greater given the differences in Brazilian and Portuguese grammar.
The Brazilian written standard, which is defined by law and by international treaties withother Portuguese-speaking countries, is very similar to the EU but there arenevertheless many differences in spelling, vocabulary, and grammar. European andBrazilian writers also have remarkable different preferences when choosing betweensupposedly quivalente words or constructions.
Nevertheless, the cultural prestige and strong government support to the writtenstandard, the unity of language across the country kept, and ensure that all regionalvarieties remain interchangeable. Starting in the '60s, the national dominance of thesouth-based TV channels also the dialect of that region (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo)made an unofficial standard for spoken language. |
